The Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will reveal our dynamic universe as never seen before. By mapping the night sky every few nights for ten years, the Survey will collect data for billions of stars and galaxies though space and time. Using these data, scientists will explore the structure of the Milky Way, spot potentially hazardous asteroids, determine the properties of dark energy and dark matter, and make discoveries that we have not yet imagined.

THE LSSTC DATA SCIENCE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

The LSSTC Data Science Fellowship Program (DSFP) is a two-year training program, designed to teach astronomy students essential skills for dealing with big data from LSST. The program is supported by the LSST Corporation through its Enabling Science initiative.

LSSTC Data Science Fellows learn a wide range of essential skills: the basics of managing and building code, statistics, machine learning, scalable programing, data management, image processing, visualization, and communication.

The DSFP consists of six, one-week schools over a two-year period (three per year), allowing students ample time to attain mastery of these skills. On top of teaching our students the skills they need for modern survey astronomy, we also aim to create a collaborative, supportive learning environment, and work to empower our students to teach the skills they learn to others. We strive to create an inclusive program, and particularly encourage applications from students from traditionally underrepresented groups in astronomy.

Upon completion, students seed the LSSTC member institutions, science collaborations, and broader astrophysics community with skilled, expert researchers.
