Science Communication Tool Kit: Facing the English Language Barrier

Date:

Friday, March 1, 2019, 9:00am to 12:30pm

Location:

Phillips Auditorium
Many scientists who are experts in their field find that speaking in public about their work is particularly challenging.  This challenge can be compounded if the language commonly used to communicate science is not their native tongue.

This workshop, designed for members of our community for whom English is a second, third, or fourth language, will help address issues common to non-native speakers when communicating about science.

We will investigate cultural differences in both connection with the audience and use of body language.  Participants will learn about “vocal posture” to help with clarity of articulation.  We will explore pitch, rate and volume to help with audience comprehension.  We will examine the sources of stage fright and ways to combat its effects.  Through experiential exercises and individual coaching, participants will leave with new specific skills for their presentation tool kit.
