ORCiD

ORCiD stands for Open Researcher and Contributor ID

About ORCiD

ORCiD® (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) iDs are persistent identifiers for researchers. This author identification tool is an effort that is being supported by libraries, publishers, and funders to help connect researchers to their works. Some publishers and funders already require ORCiD iDs, and many others will soon join them.

Why ORCiD?

An ORCiD iD allows you to

  • Distinguish yourself from other authors with similar names
  • Consolidate all your works in one place
  • Provide a comprehensive work history to publishers and funders

1. Register

Both the Smithsonian Institution and Harvard University have new policies in place asking researchers, scholars, faculty, and scientists to sign up for and use ORCiD to track scholarly contributions.  ORCiD can be used to keep track of publications, datasets, patents, and grants among other things.

Signing up for an ORCiD and registering it with your institution is easy!  Please follow the appropriate instructions linked below depending on your affiliation.
